Description
Polished septarian sphere from Madagascar. Septarians were formed millions of years ago when decomposing sea life in ancient oceans combined with surrounding sediment to form balls of 'mud'. As the oceans receded, the balls were left to dry and crack. They also shrank at the same time, trapping these internal cracks.Over the course of millions of years, calcite calcite minerals carried by water were deposited into the cracks, filling the cracks and occasionally forming beautiful crystals in the cavities.Surrounded by a thin wall of Aragonite, these nodules became known as Septarians. Septarian is often referred to as "Dragon Stone" because the natural patterns that resemble the perceived notion of dragon skin.
