Description

This tooth belonged to an Elasmosaur which in the Plesiosaur family. Elasmosaur was a large prehistoric marine reptile from the Cretaceous period. Elasmosaurs breathed air; they had a short stout body with four powerful paddles for propelling them at great speeds, they also had a long neck which may have aided them in darting towards their prey with a rapid movement. Elasmosaurs may have weighed up to 2.5 tons and reached up to 45' in length. They had a small head relative to their body, they preyed mainly on fish.
Some Elasmosaurs have been found with small stones in their stomachs; these may have been used to help grind up their food, or as ballast to help them dive.
This genuine elasmosaur tooth is in good condition with only minor repair and/or restoration.
